    Thanks for the video. I love finding ways to use "trash" in creative projects. Repurposing anything gives me joy. I put my leftover food in glass containers that I have repurposed or thrifted. I would just put a pan lid that fits well enough and use your glass jar find for that.

    I have a question/video suggestion - I’ve found a small portable solar panel secondhand I’m thinking of buying to try and charge my devices with instead. Would that actually be sustainable though as I imagine it may take more energy to make the device than my phone does to charge. Would love to hear your thoughts :)

    Watched this while turning paper from the recycling bin into little stars! Thank you for talking about this, especially the lino as that's one of the many arts/crafts I'm interested in. I'm constantly making art and crafts, and environmentalism is essential in that practice for me. I don't find it limiting in my creativity at all, honestly I think it expands it.

    I keep glass jars too! My pasta sauce jars actually fit the Mason jar lids, so those are very handy, but I keep all glass jars because I buy a lot of my legumes, rice, quinoa organic and in bulk, so instead of keeping them in the plastic bags, I use my jars (and I label my jars with a strip of clear stick tape and a marker). I also shop 2nd hand; mostly just for tops (I have found some fabulous high-end blazers and blouses), and I found 1 pair of genuine leather shoes that are extremely comfortable ($8), and a small genuine leather purse ($3) that I have been using every day since I bought it 6 months ago. I have not used your soap scraps method: I usually just take the tiny bit at press it into the new bar towards the end of my shower when they are soft and pliable and let them dry out together until my next shower - works pretty well! I’m also a big fan of cloth napkins… I guess I’m weird too, and I’m perfectly OK with that! 😊

    Someone at work said that her grandmother doesn't like her buying new cards for her and wants gives the cards she recieves back to regive at the next event, but the person at my work doesn't like it so she keeps buying new cards for her grandmother. I sugested that she can leave a new mesage with the date every time she gives the card back, that way they both get what they want. No more buying new cards. I'm going to ask if my mam will participate in this because it's a really nice idea to look back at all the messages fromm previous years.

    i recently inherited a bunch of clothes and am currently selling it cheaply through vinted. For my situation, it's been a good way to get rid of these clothes in a semi-sustainable way and earn a small amount for the time and energy going into that process. I completely agree that the support from Vinted is abysmal. A lot of it is automated and I recently lost out on a sale because the shipping courier (Postnord - surprise, surprise...) lost most of the items in the package. I was told by Vinted tat "after looking at the evidence" they conccluded that the box wasn't in prober condition, when I send it and I therefor had to eat the loss - not Postnord. It was and I had gaffataped the corners for extra security. I asked what evidence they were basing their decision on and they said that it was confidential. Bs. They just didnt want to deal with it and go against Postnord so it's easier to turn it on me and have me eat the loss.

    I even pick up discarded clothes in the countryside and wash and reuse them. This week i found a sweatshirt jacket, very wet, but took it home and washed and dried it and it's as good as new. On the same walk we came across a black bag full of old water bottles, which we recycled the small ones and u made the large ones into cloches for gender plants, and washed and reused the old plastic carrier bags. So there winds in that walk.

    Okay so I was waiting for the weird stuff (or new good ideas for me). I am not zero waste, just considerate for everything I use and I do all of this? I find it kind of sad, that this seems to be far out for some people. I mean, not throwing away parts of soap or not using paper towels, is that really special? Where are we at a society if that's the case?

  • @michelleheegaard
    @michelleheegaard День тому

    I guess my "weird" zero waste habit is to not throw out any food leftover ever. Unless it's moldy, I will save the tiniest amount of food leftover (can just be a small bit or two). I dont mind eating leftovers cold and it can be a nice little micro-lunch for me the day after. I've often scraped my own plate into a small bowl and eaten it the next day. For me, this is just sensible but I have gotten a lot of comments about it from people finding it weird or extreme.

    Thank you for your efforts to save the planet. I've done all of these but the orange peels, and the shower bucket. I have used my bath water to water plants outside--carried it out with a bucket. (When we were under water restrictions during a drought.) There's a minimal amount of soap in it, but most plants don't mind. I love shopping second-hand. My weird things--saving wrapping paper from gifts, and reusing it. Saving paper stuffed into shipping boxes--flattening it out and re-rolling it for a future use. I use coffee grounds for my plants, and even take apart tea bags. I use liquid soap, and combine leftovers. I'm currently saving toilet paper rolls. There are art projects online, to make them look like wrought iron once painted. I compost my junk mail. Run it through a shredder, get it wet, and mix it with food scraps. When I refresh the dog's water, I use the stale remains he's drooled in, for my plants. I empty all the trash containers into one, and keep reusing the same bags. I use my sewing scraps to stuff pillows. I made my own cotton shopping bags I carry to the grocery store. I'm saving up my plastic bottle caps. I plan to hot glue them into a mosaic mat to put outside under the trash cans.

    Im very chill with using second hand textiles. Basically all of my clothes are stuff I pulled from the dumpstairs and washed (you wouldnt believe the amount of stuff people throw out). Towels, bed sheets etc.. I dont care. The only thing I cant really deal with is underwear.. I cant get myself to wear someone's old knickers - and I dont tend to wear bras. Im fine with using someones old bralet. But knickers... I have enough right now to sustain for at least 2 years and when I need new ones, I guess I can teach myself how to sew. Or deal with the environmental cost of buying some new ones.

    I love your video introduction - yes, let us talk about :) Everytime I see some videos from the USA I am always irritated how normal the use of plastic dishes is. In Germany and I think the most european countrys we only use this for barbecuepartys or other events with many people - more than normal and sometimes childrens birthdaypartys. We never use single-use-dishes because it is unstastainable and I more like normal dihses to eat of it. Thank´s for remembering me: the shower bucket. My grandmather always had and I forget it all the time. We also will use since today :D What us really safe thousands of liter of water every month: We don´t flush after pipi in the toilet. Before friends visit us I checked every toilet and flush :D We also have a pipi Bucket for the boys - If they want they can use and we can use it for the plants in our garden.

    I sew quite a lot for my grandkids, and of course there are always some scraps left after cutting out the t-shirt. I use several layers of these scraps, combined with old towel scraps in the middle, to sew washable pads: either make-up removing pads or sanitary pads.

    Most of that seems pretty mainstream! I live in Alaska, and we aren’t zero waste by any means, but many of those habits are common. The shower water one was the strangest to me, but I live in a place with plenty of water and no real need to limit usage. When taking a reusable plate in public-how does that work? Does the cashier take your plate back to the kitchen? The silverware and straw and Tupperware And napkin make sense to bring along, but I can’t think of a way to use the plate. Some easy low impact frugal/sustainable life changes (that may not align with your sustainability priorities): Using a bidet instead of toilet paper Using fabric squares instead of tissues Making your own soap

    I basically do everything on your list. I just put the soaps in a little soap bag. What I do in addition to your list to avoid rubbish... I have no clingfilm and no tin-foil in my house. I usually just use a little plate to cover up a bowl. Works as well and produces no waste. People often find that weird, that I have bowls with plates on top of them in my fridge.
